In the space of one month, we have had two more countries joining the fold of the elite nations granting full marriage rights to gay and lesbian couples. Spain and Canada had recently become the 3rd and 4th country in the world to legally recognise gay marriages, following the footsteps of the Netherlands and Belgium.

We have indeed come very far to actually reach this point...

What have our ancestors gone through in the past to actually allow us to enjoy this fruit of success, which is nothing less than miraculous? When did gay movement first Emerge?

Have you heard of the Stonewall Incidents which is widely regarded as the starting point of gay right movements?

Do you know the incident behind the removal of homosexuality from the list of mental disorder by the American Psychiatric Association?

DO you know how the AIDS epidemic in the 1980's affected gay movement by changing its emphasis from freedom and separation to caring, responsibility, community, and commitment - the preconditions for the development of a marriage ethic?

Do you know how civil rights for LGBT slowly came into being in many countries following the untiring effort of LGBT leaders to ensure equality and civil protection in the name of law?

Do you know how gay marriages, and gay unions find their way into the constitution of many countries all over the world within the span of less then 20 years?

Do you know of the challenges that lie ahead before us? The various vicious backlashes that threatens to bring the world backward in terms of human rights?

What are the lessons to be learned from our history?
