  THE IRON LADIES (2000) THAILAND

Will they go all the way?

Often, there come films where over-acting was obvious, and too many face expression would be used for comic relief.  This film was one of those.  But for this film, those were forgivable.  This was because the film celebrated the spirit of triumph even when the players were labeled as underdogs.  Based on a true story that took Thailand by surprise, the team of transvestites, transsexuals and a gay won the national volleyball championship.  This film was full of fun, and charmed its way into the hearts of many, gays and non-gays alike.  Be warned - the characters were memorable. Mon (Sahaphap Tor) Was the discriminated player, who was barred for he was a transvestite.  Jung (Chaicharn Nimpulsawasdi), his best friend was the one who supported and pushed him not to give up.  Jung was most probably the fun-nest character among all here.  Nong (Giorgio Maiocchi) was the buffy soldier, but with a woman's heart trapped within.  Pia (Kokkorn Benjathikoon) was the transsexual who was going through difficult time of breaking up with her prince charming.  Wit (Ekachai Buranapanit) was the closet Chinese gay who was pressured to get married.  And the straight handsome captain, Chai (Jesdaporn Pholdee), who had to bear with the queens.

Box-Office Grossing - $110,825 (USA), Baht 100 million (US$2.3 million) (Thailand), HK$16 million, S$500,000 and US$1 million (Japan).
