  BIRDCAGE, THE (1996) USA

Robin Williams &
Nathan Lane

Come as you are.

When Val (Dan Futterman) announced that he was engaged to Barbie (Calista Flockhart), his gay father Armand Goldman (Robin Williams) and his partner, Albert (Nathan Lane) did not expect commotion was to follow this innocent announcement.  Barbie's father, the senator Kevin Keely (Gene Hackman) was caught in a scandal and needed to escape from the limelight, through diversion.  Believing that his daughter was going to marry into a good family, Senator Keely wanted the press to divert their attention to the marriage issue.  Little did Senator Keely knew that his daughter's future in-laws were drag nightclub owner, and the other, a veteran drag queen.  It was left at the end to Albert to make the tought decision.  Was he in the way of the marriage, or would he be the savior?  Dianne Wiest acted as Senator's wife.  Funny.  This film was a remake of France's La Cage aux Folles (1978).
